About DeChant Law
DeChant Law is a criminal defense and DUI trial firm in Denver, Colorado, founded in 2023 by trial attorney Reid DeChant. We represent people facing DUI and criminal charges in courts across Colorado. We’re built for the courtroom: every case is prepared for trial from the first call.
Our Core Values
Unreasonable Representation
We go above and beyond to make you feel heard and seen. That means more preparation than the case seems to call for, more questions, and more stones turned over. We can’t promise there’s something under every stone. We promise we’ll look.
Proactive
We build your story from day one, without waiting for the government. We go through the reports and look for inconsistencies.
Trust
We listen, tailor our approach and work with you as a team. How you’re treated throughout your case matters to us.
Transparency
Honest advice on the good, the bad and the difficult, with clear fees. Make informed decisions, knowing no lawyer can guarantee an outcome.
Tenacity
We don’t back down. We dig deeper, prepare harder and take cases to trial when others won’t, because you deserve nothing less.
Built for the Courtroom
We are a trial firm first. We love this work, and we care about the person standing next to us. That’s why we don’t pressure anyone into accepting the first offer.
From day one, we prepare your case as if it’s going to trial. We go through the reports, the body camera video and the evidence looking for what the state missed. Preparation gives you options, at the negotiating table and in front of a jury. Most cases never reach a jury, and whether yours does is always your decision. When trial is the right call, we’re ready to take it there.
Anything can happen at trial. Witnesses don’t show up. Stories change. Details get missed by people who don’t know the file as well as we do. We prepare so that when an opening appears, we’re ready for it. See how we prepare for trial.
We Win in the Gray
The state builds a case in black and white. Real lives, real science and real courtrooms don’t work that way.
Most cases aren’t a simple question of guilty or not guilty. They live in the gray: the context the police report left out, the conditions on the road that night, the toxicology that doesn’t say what the state thinks it says, and the human being behind the allegation. That’s where the state’s story tends to fall apart, and that’s where we do our work.
In the courtroom, you are Mr. or Mrs., never “the defendant.” That isn’t a small thing. How people talk about you shapes how they see you.
We can’t guarantee an outcome. We can guarantee an unmatched standard of preparation and a team that cares.

Our Mission
Give people a voice by advocating for them unreasonably.
The system is good at reducing a person to a single moment, a case number and a label. We refuse to let that moment define you. We develop your story, we know the case better than anyone in the courtroom, and we make sure you feel seen, defended and never alone in the fight for a second chance.
We don’t just fight for our clients. We fight with them.

How do your fees work?
We charge flat fees because we have been doing this type of work for years, which enables us to know the time it will take to resolve the case. You know the cost of your representation up front, in writing. See how our flat fees work.
Do you take cases to trial?
Yes. We’re built for the courtroom, and we prepare every case for trial from day one. Many cases resolve before trial, and whether to go to trial is always your decision, made with our honest advice.
Do you have Spanish-speaking staff?
Yes, we have several staff members who speak Spanish. Spanish-language information is available on our En Español page.
What kinds of cases do you handle?
DUI and DWAI, criminal charges including assault, domestic violence, drug, theft and felony cases, and professional license defense.
How will I know what’s happening with my case?
We keep you updated as your case progresses, and you can check where things stand through our application you can download right on your phone. This will give you access to where you are in the case timeline, a calendar to see your upcoming court dates and a message board to directly message your paralegal and attorney team.
How do I select the right criminal defense attorney?
Read online reviews to evaluate their communication, consistency, and client satisfaction in real-world cases. Determine whether the attorney actively takes cases to trial or relies on quick plea deals. Prosecutors know who is willing to fight in front of a jury; a trial lawyer who is willing to fight gives you more options at the negotiating table. Pay attention to how they treat you during your initial consultation. Make sure you feel a genuine commitment to your defense rather than feeling like another file passing through an assembly line.
What questions should I ask a criminal defense attorney before hiring them?
- “When was the last time you took a case to trial?” This reveals whether their litigation skills are current or if they default to quick settlements.
- “What do you enjoy most about criminal defense work?” Their answer shows whether they are driven by a genuine passion for defending rights or simply managing a high volume of cases.
- “Who will be directly handling my court appearances and motions?” This ensures your case won’t be passed off to inexperienced junior associates without your knowledge.
Why should I choose a former public defender over a former prosecutor?
Right out of law school, attorneys choose a fundamental career path: using state authority to incarcerate people or taking lower pay with fewer resources to fight fiercely for indigent clients. Attorneys with a public defender background developed their skills in high-volume, trial-heavy trenches. They built their legal foundation on protecting constitutional rights against the full weight of the government. That belief in the fight translates directly into aggressive, unwavering advocacy in private defense.
