Colorado’s Points System
Colorado, like many states, uses a points system to keep track of bad drivers—those who speed, cause collisions, and are cited for other types of moving violations. In order to lose your license, you must accrue:
- Nine points in 12 month period of time
- 12 points within 24 consecutive months
- There are other points categories for drivers younger than 21

This points system is operated by the Colorado Department of Revenue, Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV). It is a completely separate entity from the criminal courts.
